Online dating changed who you can meet. Before the internet, the people you dated were the people you happened to be near: your town, your office, your friends of friends. If your neighborhood was small or unvaried, so were your chances.

That is no longer true. Today a dating app can put you in front of people from outside your circle, and often outside your city. If you are a black man who wants to meet white women, or a white man who wants to meet black women, that matters.

Start with a profile that says something

Most messages get ignored because the profile gives nothing to reply to. Two sentences about your work and your weekend are enough.

Use three or four photographs: one clear picture of your face, one of you doing something you actually enjoy, and one with other people so it is obvious which person is you. Skip the filters. People are looking for someone recognizable, not someone retouched.

Write first messages that are easy to answer

“Hey” gives the other person nothing to work with. A first message works better when it mentions something specific from their profile and ends with a question: what they thought of the place in their photo, how long they have been doing their sport, which dish they would recommend from the restaurant they mentioned.

Keep it short, keep it warm, and do not send three messages in a row. If there is no reply, move on.

Talk about race, but not on the first line

If you are writing to someone from a different background, you do not have to pretend that difference does not exist. You also do not have to open with it. Nobody wants to be the answer to a question about race.

Ask about the person first. The subject will come up on its own, usually easier and usually better once you are both comfortable.

Move at a pace that suits you both

Chat inside the app until you are ready to move. When you do meet, choose somewhere public, tell a friend where you are going, and arrange your own transport home. That advice applies to everyone, and it is worth repeating.

Be honest about what you want

Some people are looking for something serious. Some are looking for company, and some are just testing the water. All of that is fine, as long as you are straight with the person in front of you. Being honest early saves both of you time, and it is what makes the good conversations possible.

Online dating is not a shortcut, but it does widen the room you are standing in. That is all it has to do.
