In recent years it has become increasingly common for white women to date black men. In most American cities the pairing is unremarkable. In some places it still draws a look, usually from someone older and usually brief.
What is remarkable is how often the question “why?” is still answered with a stereotype.
The ugly version
There is a familiar list of explanations that gets passed around: she is desperate, she is rebelling against her family, she is chasing money, she could not find a white man, she is doing it for attention.
Every one of those says more about the person repeating it than about the couple. They are guesses dressed up as reasons, and they all share the same flaw: they assume a woman cannot simply prefer the man she is with.
The ordinary version
Ask couples and the answers are boring in the best way. They met at work, at university, at a party, on an app. They liked each other. They laughed at the same things. The relationship worked, so it continued.
Attraction is personal. Some people are drawn to confidence, some to a sense of humour, some to height or voice or the way someone listens. Race is visible, but it is not a personality.
Shared values do the important work
Couples who stay together tend to agree about the things that matter: money, family, children, religion, how much time to spend with relatives, where to live. Those are the conversations that decide whether a relationship has a future.
Race can affect how the two of you were raised, which means it is worth talking about openly, but it is not what keeps a couple together.
What both partners deal with
Couples in interracial relationships handle reactions from the outside: a comment, a stare, a family member who takes longer to come round. The tools are the same in every case. Do not argue with everyone, keep talking to each other, and do not let other people set the terms of your relationship.
The honest answer
The reason a white woman dates a black man is the same reason anyone dates anyone: she likes him. Everything else is commentary.
